{"id":6712,"date":"2025-07-01T15:16:39","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T12:16:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/altal.ro\/?p=6712"},"modified":"2025-07-01T15:42:56","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T12:42:56","slug":"marketing-hype","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/altal.ro\/en\/marketing-hype\/","title":{"rendered":"Misleading marketing hype"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 data-start=\"338\" data-end=\"426\">Misleading marketing hype<\/h1>\n<p>For example, marketing exaggerations: heat pump technical data <strong>Model NNN<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"2574\" data-end=\"2629\">Heating capacity: 13 kW (<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">26\u00b0C air \/ 26\u00b0C water<\/span><\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2574\" data-end=\"2629\" class=\"translation-block\">COP: <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">7,3 \u2013 15,4<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2574\" data-end=\"2629\">Heating capacity: 9 kW (15\u00b0C air \/ 26\u00b0C water)<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2574\" data-end=\"2629\">COP: <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">4,8 \u2013 7,7<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2574\" data-end=\"2629\">Cooling capacity: 5.6 kW (35\u00b0C air \/ 28\u00b0C water)<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2574\" data-end=\"2629\">Operating modes: Heating and cooling<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2574\" data-end=\"2629\">Recommended pool volume: 30 \u2013 60 m\u00b3<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2574\" data-end=\"2629\">Input power: <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">0,23 \u2013 1,81 kW<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2574\" data-end=\"2629\">Rated current: 9.2 A<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2574\" data-end=\"2629\">Water connection: <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00d8 50 mm<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"338\" data-end=\"426\">Pool heat pump with COP 15?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"428\" data-end=\"794\">In some online stores, the Model NNN heat pump (we do not advertise - you can find it through search engines) is presented by some distributors as a revolutionary heat pump for swimming pools, with spectacular performance: a <a href=\"https:\/\/altal.ro\/en\/air-to-water-heat-pump-12-kw\/\"><strong data-start=\"576\" data-end=\"608\">heating power of 13 kW<\/strong><\/a> and a <strong data-start=\"615\" data-end=\"647\">minimum consumption of only 0.23 kW<\/strong>. On paper, it seems like an ideal choice. In reality? It&#039;s a classic case of <strong data-start=\"719\" data-end=\"758\">marketing hype specifications<\/strong>, which do not correspond to basic physics.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"833\">COP of 15? A physical impossibility<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"835\" data-end=\"1184\">The seller supports a <strong data-start=\"859\" data-end=\"894\">COP (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coefficient_of_performance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">performance coefficient<\/a>)<\/strong> up to <strong data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"914\">15,4<\/strong> under certain conditions. What does this mean? That for every 1 kWh consumed, the pump delivers over <strong data-start=\"1009\" data-end=\"1030\">15 kWh of heat<\/strong>In theory, this would mean an efficiency of 1500%, which is <strong data-start=\"1101\" data-end=\"1111\">absurd<\/strong> from a thermodynamic point of view, even for laboratory conditions. By the way \u2013 on the manufacturer\u2019s website there is no such data. More or less \u2013 approximately, the technical data is correct on the manufacturer\u2019s website. Perpetuum Mobile is invented only by local sellers. These marketing exaggerations are just the seller\u2019s inventions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1186\" data-end=\"1204\">In real conditions:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1205\" data-end=\"1400\">\n<li data-start=\"1205\" data-end=\"1289\">\n<p data-start=\"1207\" data-end=\"1289\">A COP of 15 cannot be achieved <a href=\"https:\/\/altal.ro\/en\/air-water-dual\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>not even with advanced geothermal heat pumps<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1290\" data-end=\"1400\">\n<p data-start=\"1292\" data-end=\"1400\">In air-to-water applications, a realistic COP for swimming pools is <strong data-start=\"1349\" data-end=\"1365\">between 4 and 6<\/strong> at very favorable external temperatures.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Professional data about COP can be found here: <strong data-start=\"859\" data-end=\"894\">COP (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coefficient_of_performance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">performance coefficient<\/a>). <\/strong>Or in other publications written by competent specialists.<\/p>\n<p>In short:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cTest results for the best systems are around 4.5. When measuring units installed over a full season and taking into account the energy required to pump water through the piping systems, seasonal COPs for heating are around 3.5 or less. This indicates that there is room for further improvement.\u201d<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1402\" data-end=\"1475\">13 kW heating power with 0.23 kW consumption? A dangerous joke<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1477\" data-end=\"1499\">According to the data sheet:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1500\" data-end=\"1597\">\n<li data-start=\"1500\" data-end=\"1536\">\n<p data-start=\"1502\" data-end=\"1536\">The heating power is 13 kW.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1537\" data-end=\"1597\">\n<p data-start=\"1539\" data-end=\"1597\">The electrical power absorbed is between 0.23 and 1.81 kW (!)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1599\" data-end=\"1640\">This is <strong data-start=\"1616\" data-end=\"1639\">mathematically impossible<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1641\" data-end=\"1837\">\n<li data-start=\"1641\" data-end=\"1734\">\n<p data-start=\"1643\" data-end=\"1734\">13 kW divided by 0.23 kW = COP of 56.5 (!) \u2013 which goes against the laws of thermodynamics.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1735\" data-end=\"1837\">\n<p data-start=\"1737\" data-end=\"1837\">In reality, a 13 kW pump needs <strong data-start=\"1782\" data-end=\"1808\">at least 2.5 \u2013 3.5 kW<\/strong> to operate efficiently at a PREMIUM class. Real is 4 kW consumption.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"1839\" data-end=\"1872\">Marketing exaggerations that hide reality<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1874\" data-end=\"1991\">These unrealistic data are <strong data-start=\"1902\" data-end=\"1937\">designed to attract naive customers<\/strong>, who don&#039;t understand how a heat pump works:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1992\" data-end=\"2249\">\n<li data-start=\"1992\" data-end=\"2060\">\n<p data-start=\"1994\" data-end=\"2060\">The actual COP depends on the temperature difference between air and water.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2061\" data-end=\"2163\">\n<p data-start=\"2063\" data-end=\"2163\">At 26\u00b0C air \/ 26\u00b0C water, there is almost no significant heat transfer, so the data is irrelevant.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2164\" data-end=\"2249\">\n<p data-start=\"2166\" data-end=\"2249\">No one uses a heat pump to keep water at air temperature.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"2251\" data-end=\"2272\">Who is affected by these marketing exaggerations?<\/h2>\n<ol data-start=\"2274\" data-end=\"2658\">\n<li data-start=\"2274\" data-end=\"2412\">\n<p data-start=\"2277\" data-end=\"2412\"><strong data-start=\"2277\" data-end=\"2296\">End customers<\/strong> \u2014 who may be disappointed after installation, noticing that electricity bills are higher than the technical data sheet promises.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2413\" data-end=\"2543\">\n<p data-start=\"2416\" data-end=\"2543\"><strong data-start=\"2416\" data-end=\"2458\">Serious installers and distributors<\/strong> \u2014 which must explain why the &#034;miracle&#034; in the brochure doesn&#039;t happen in reality.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2544\" data-end=\"2658\">\n<p data-start=\"2547\" data-end=\"2658\"><strong data-start=\"2547\" data-end=\"2569\">The entire industry<\/strong> \u2014 because such marketing exaggerations undermine confidence in heat pump technology.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr data-start=\"2660\" data-end=\"2663\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2665\" data-end=\"2738\">What to check before buying a pool heat pump?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2740\" data-end=\"3031\">\u2705 <strong data-start=\"2742\" data-end=\"2767\">Real date to test<\/strong> \u2013 independent certificate (e.g. EN14511)<br data-start=\"2810\" data-end=\"2813\" \/>\u2705 <strong data-start=\"2815\" data-end=\"2851\">COP at real external temperatures<\/strong> \u2013 for example: air 15\u00b0C, water 26\u00b0C<br data-start=\"2884\" data-end=\"2887\" \/>\u2705 <strong data-start=\"2889\" data-end=\"2919\">Electrical power absorbed<\/strong> \u2013 not to differ by 1000% from what is delivered<br data-start=\"2963\" data-end=\"2966\" \/>\u2705 <strong data-start=\"2968\" data-end=\"2999\">Manufacturer transparency<\/strong> \u2013 does it provide real technical reports?<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3033\" data-end=\"3036\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"3038\" data-end=\"3088\">Conclusion: Be careful of impossible promises<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3090\" data-end=\"3372\">The Model NNN pump may perform well under some conditions, but the data in the specifications is <strong data-start=\"3185\" data-end=\"3213\">misleading and exaggerated<\/strong>. COPs of 10+ in air-water are marketing hype, fantasy, but not technical reality.
